The Principal Secretary, State Department for University Education and Research Prof. Micheni Ntiba has challenged researchers to transform their innovations into commercially viable products that can enhance the country’s economic growth.The PS noted that Kenya has vast resources that can be transformed into products which can be commercialized to compete with the international markets.
Prof. Ntiba underscored the need for researchers to generate new ideas and seek mechanisms of converting knowledge into products so that Africa can have market abroad.He said the government recognizes research as a key component in improving the economy and has therefore allocated 6 billion shillings in the National budget for research in view of raising the Research Kitty to 2% GDP which currently stands at 0.05%.He asked Development partners and stakeholders in Science Technology and Innovation to form partnerships so as to increase funding and to support local innovations.
The Principal Secretary was addressing key stakeholders in research funding during a breakfast hosted by the National research fund (NRF).
